A Space For Relaxing
25.jpg” alt=”" width=”300″ height=”225″ />This room showcases what Smart Design is all about. The homeowners already had several nice pieces that they loved. We reintroduced them into the finished space in combination with new purchases and great finds from various local resources.
We purchased a new couch and two chairs to provide a contemporary feel. The pair of chairs were clearance items. The homowners had the large leather ottoman, lamps, and unique wooden room divider. The rest of the furnishings, purchased at local antique stores, provide the room’s chic character.
The major focal point of this room is the set of three mirrors above the couch. They open the room and provide a Zen-like feel in the space. They weren’t always mirrors. They started as closet doors. I narrowed them down and replaced each panel with mirrors. The round table sitting between the two chairs was a total steal for $18 at a secondhand store. The fabulous oriental-style sofa table was purchased at auction for only $200. An old electric school clock keeps time and brings
back childhood memories. It adds a certain charming character to the room for only $20. The large area
rug grounds all these pieces together for $400.
You don’t realize it’s a T.V. room until you turn around and see the built-in shelving, housing a flat-screen TV. The homeowners wanted this to be their T.V. room, but the space would not accomodate a TV stand and comfortable seating. So I removed part of one wall, taking it back eighteen inches, to create space for the built-in shelving. I used cabinetry the homeowners
salvaged out of a neighbor’s garage. Repurposing the old cabinetry helps the built-in look as if its part of the home’s original floor plan. A few pieces of trim, a sheet of bead board for the back and contemporary handles are all the cabinets required.
The large floor-to-ceiling curtain panels of deep green fabric add height to the room and soften the two large windows. I purchased fabric during a 50% off sale and sewed the panels and sheers. Even the dark wood curtain rods and mounts were purchased in clearance at 75% off.
This room provides a tranquil character. It is a great mix of contemporary and traditional. Its introduction of eclectic and quirky pieces create a space with it’s own identity. It has all the makings of a well executed space without the high end designer price tag.
